Whaddon Away – 23rd April

Sandon Strollers turned up for their first game of the season away at Whaddon – 11 highly tuned athletes and Tom Roper (or it might be the other way round) – see team photo

Remarkably we were able to present Henry “Mercedes” Hughes with his ‘Bowler of the Year Award’ from the previous season before the game (Henry was early) – see picture

Lovely setting, lovely day then some ‘plonker’ lost the toss, so we faced the new ball on a green track and fell to 53 for 7.  The 8th wicket partnership recovered things, led by a 55 retired from Rob “a Bob” Fisher.  Dave Green and Paul Wastell hit out well at the end so the Strollers scored 187 for 9 from 36 overs.

Dave “Ever Young” Green bowled well at the start of their Innings with no luck.  Tom Roper got a splendid wicket (caught by the diving Henry Hughes) and his Dad then picked up three wickets, Mr Fisher one and Henry one (great catch by Richard Kay). However Whaddon accumulated runs and got the 188 needed with a leg bye off the penultimate ball of the game.

So a loss but a great game.  Everyone batted on the Strollers team and all who wanted to bowled. Pity about the poor tosser. We would have benefited batting second against the old ball on a dry wicket.

Thank you to Paul Heath for scoring and for collecting the money and to Paul Wastell for taking the kit.
